Patent pending

Leusden – the Netherlands, 28 January 2025 - Taking into account sustainability and the new EU PPWR legislation Modiform has expanded her range of transport trays. Recently Modiform filed a patent for a new multiple use transport tray system. This is a solution with minimal disruption to existing processes, is simple in logistics and storage, is sustainable and in line with changed regulations. This new reusable tray system will be unveiled for the first time at the IPM in Essen, Germany.

In 2024, the new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation came into effect and it also concerns transport trays for plant pots. This EU legislation sets the goal that the majority of transport trays must be used multiple times within the EU: in 2030, plastic transport packaging must be used multiple times if it concerns transport that takes place within 1 country in the EU, or within 1 company. In other cases, 40% of transport packaging must be used multiple times.

Until now, transport trays have been developed based on the requirements that growers have for their cultivation and also transport of their plants. This has resulted in a diversity of transport trays so that every grower can get the maximum return from his cultivation by transporting his plants very efficiently. With the transition from single use to multiple use, the storage of trays must also be taken into account, at growers, at return locations and at retailers. If there is a diversity of trays, stacking used trays can take up a lot of space. Space that is often not there.

That is why Modiform has developed a new transport tray system: that is good for multiple use, transport can remain efficient and is optimal for storage. The system is very universal (handy for storage and reusability) and at the same time no compromise is made on the specific plant/pot solutions as was already available with the single use trays.

The system consists of 4 carrier sizes with external dimensions that are aligned with the Normpack® series: NP 200 (400x280 mm), NP 400 (562x253 mm), NP 300 (562x315 mm) and NP Cactus (270x248 mm). Each size has 2 variations: with bottom holes or with water reserves. Resulting in a total of 8 universal carriers. The carrier are made for multiple use and are made of plastic. They consist of at least 35% recycled content and are also recyclable.

These universal carriers are designed to be combined with a wide range of cardboard lids. These lids are available in any version of the Normpack® series. After use, these lids can be disposed of with cardboard waste for recycling.

Gert-Jan Smal, Senior Product Consultant at Modiform, member of the experienced team that has developed this system: “We took up the challenge to develop something that is as universal as possible and matches the needs of individual customers. I am happy to share that we managed to develop something that is simple to use and is sturdy & stable
